One of the best ways to start greening up our lifestyle is to shop from sellers who have eco-friendly practices. Since we cannot in any way avoid doing our share of shopping, why not do it from stores who are geared towards saving the Earth. In that way, we have satisfied our need to shop while at the same time helped save the world - two needs satisfied with one endeavor.
Since my family loves books, my first stop in my resolve to live a greener lifestyle is to find booksellers who are passionate about the good of the environment. If you should know, a good portion of my family's shopping goes to books, so it's quite a relief to find a bookseller who meets this requirement.
Better World Books is an example of a company that is doing a lot of good for mother Earth. It's an online bookstore with a soul, which collects and sells new and used books with FREE shipping within the United States and for only $3.97 worldwide.
The great things about Better World Books are:
- It's not your traditional next door company that somehow just managed to include a "cause" component only as an afterthought. Responsibility for the society and for the environment is at the core of it's business;
- It diverts books from landfills - buying used books is one of the best ways to reuse. Remember that reusing is one of the four most important actions in adopting a greener lifestyle. To date, Better World Books has saved over 6,000 TONS of books from landfills;
- It's books are up to 80% cheaper than new ones;
- It eliminates its carbon footprint with offsets from Carbonfund.org;
- It has donated nearly a million books to partner programs around the world;
- It shares it's revenues by funding literacy programs around the world such as Books for Africa, Room to Read, and Invisible Children;
Books are major part of our lives. Whether you're a certified book reader, just getting by, or cringes at the sight of it, you can never deny that books are important tools for, and plays a major part in, learning.
As parents, we must always have that desire for our kids to learn to love books. By buying books from Better World Books, we will help save the Earth's resources, teach our kids how to reuse resources however they can, and provide an opportunity for another child somewhere in the world to learn to read and have a book of his own. A domino effect of good - all because we choose to live green.

Hi, Dee! You shared valuable gems here and I laud your advocacy on living a greener lifestyle. Checked the site. Makes me grab that other book by Milan Kundera. I have two books by said author given to me and I plan to read them again - Immortality and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Just don't read much. But I have a few good books in my shelves, like Evening by Susan Minot and The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, and a few more.
That's a cool find, Dee. Will check out the site. :)
@joji: You have already read them pala naman. Pahiram naman dyan o. lol
