Why We Need To Turn Off Our PC Overnight

I am not proud to admit this, but most of the time, I do not actually turn off my laptop overnight. Yes, I know! Ghastly of me, alright, specially considering that I'm supposed to be saving energy and the environment. I never really put that much thought into it. I only thought that since it's just a laptop, with power saving mode and an LCD screen that uses up less power than the regular CRT monitor common in most desktops, then it would be alright; because maybe, it doesn't use up all that much energy. Then of course, there's also the fact that if I did turn it off the night before or switch it into hibernation mode, I just don't have the patience, come morning, to wait it thru while it boots up and loads all the necessary stuff that would get me started.

One study has shown, however, that leaving our computers idle overnight uses up a lot of power that translates to a lot of wasted energy. A whopping $2.8 billion is wasted every year just to power unoccupied computers in the US alone. This emits approximately 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, tantamount to that belched by 4 million cars on the road. That's an awful lot of wasted energy and a much awful lot of carbon emissions, raising much environmental concerns.

The study further shows that a company with 10,000 PCs that shuts it off at night saves as much as over $260,000.00 a year and avoids carbon dioxide emissions of 1,871 tons a year. Wow! That's a lot of money. And a lot of needless CO2.

So now, I've wised up. I'm absolutely changing my unreasonable habit of leaving my laptop idle at night. I won't mind waiting it out to boot and load in the morning if it means doing something good for the environment and saving myself a lot of money to boot. Plus, of course, I do know for a fact that regularly shutting down my laptop makes it function better. Not a bad deal, for sure.

hi dee, thanks for the action on helping conserve energy. i know that its really nice to wake up and open your pc already on and go directly to your favorite sites than just waiting for it to boot and perform all maintenance and anti virus. but as you said, we will be doing a favor for the environment if we shut down our pcs the previous night. thank you for sharing and posting this article.

The good thing about turning off your pc at night is security. Most hackers prawl when computers are unattended and the best time is when the owner is asleep. If its connected to a network, hackers can control it remotely.

the statistics are incredible, huh? well, the sooner one starts to save energy the better. it's not that easy to be 'green' all the time every single day, but every ounce of effort is helpful and necessary, like turning off the computer at night or unplugging electric appliances/device not being used. also, bringing our own bags to stores and shops is one of the best things we can do.
