I came across this interesting and thorough article about the overweight differences between men and women. It talks about how there are actually more men than women who are overweight in the US, the reasons why that is so, the differences on how men and women view their weight and their reactions over it, and how men can help women cope with different problems by understanding how women perceive weight issues.
According to the article, studies have shown that in the US, 71 percent of the adult male while 62 percent of the adult female are overweight. Although more women than men are obese as there are 33 percent women and 31 percent men who are obese, the number of obese men are more on the rise than that of the women, which is more steady.
Several factors can be attributed to the difference. One of those discussed was that it seems that women can more accurately tell whether they are overweight or not. This may be due to the fact that society paints a women to be thin to be desirable, as seen in Hollywood films and in pages of magazines. Men, on the other hand, cannot seem to accurately assess if they are overweight. This may be because they spend less time in front of a mirror, or because society values large men, and the men generally equate being overweight with being big.
Another factor discussed was that women thought about their weight more often than men and had much deeper feelings about it. And, in terms of doing something about being overweight, women too had a more pro-active stance on it by having more resolve to lose weight.
The article had an in-depth discussion and analysis on this subject, and presents an insightful look into how men and women differ in terms of their views about weight and how that affects their lives.

hi dee. this is interesting. i have been trying to get a crash diet over the summer to lose weight sans exercise. bad choice really, i know, i had written a post on it. i agree that there hasn't been much pressure on men to look like twigs so some of them don't mind getting a little heavy (unless they are like my brother obsessed with losing all the fats in his body).
Happy Mother's DAy to you,Dee!!
a quick visit muna ha---medyo busy pa kasi eh!I'll be back to read your post again.
Take care!^_^
The 3rd & 4th paragraph --> I couldn't agree more! Haha....
It's maybe because the media promote a skewed and unreasonable ideas of what beauty and ideal figure is. It's very hard for women. Always driven to attain ridiculous standards of ideal proportions, body weight, even the stuff that passes for fashion.
Men have an easier time. Give him a beer. Or a remote. And his night is set. If he develops a beer belly, why! my good sir looks distinguished and prosperous.
For women? Nah. It's a cruel world out there for you. No wonder you're shedding weight just worrying about these things.
Yes, I sport a beer belly. And so? Well, I love to be mistaken as a prosperous blogger despite evidence to the contrary. That's why. ",)
@Fifi: Hi. The article is interesting and worth reading.
Oh, you're trying to lose weight too? Me too.
Haha, your brother seems quite a health buff. Maybe because of the images we see these days of men with their six packs. :)
@Clarissa: Hi there! Happy Mother's Day! Sure, I understand. Have a lovely weekend! :)
@Sera Melinda: Yes, they're true. That's why I find the article really interesting. :)
@Jodi: Oo nga, totoo yan. Pag babae, super conscious talaga sa weight nila.
Thanks for visiting and following, Jodi. I followed you na rin. :)
@Payatot: Haha, oo nga, totoo iyan. Pag babae talaga, conscious kung ilan na ang nadagdag na timbang. Makakain lang ng konting matamis o may calories, e nagbibilang na. :)
@Jan: Those are really good observations. I couldn't have said it any better!
The "shedding weight just worrying about these things"? Oh, how I wish it works that way! I would have been thinner now, come to think of it. :)
happy mom's day!
i just did your tag. :)
Hi Dee, was at Liz's place noticed your callsign.
Re your this interesting posting...
I blame weight on fast foods.
When I see what American's eat at McDonalds, of their triple or double or King size burgers, scares me, ha ha.
Comparing the Japanese, Chinese, even Philippinos...most are slim.
It is what we eat.
You have a pleasant weekend, mabuhay, Lee.
That's interesting that over half of the adult population of the US is overweight. I wonder how other countries measure up?
At any rate, daming mataba dito sa US. Mas maraming guys na overweight, since they really don't care about what they look, unless maging healt problem na, unlike ang women, body conscious talaga. Gaya ako hehehe.
Happy Mother's Day Dee..
