Some Lessons Learned from Ondoy

Typhoon Ondoy, which hit the Philippine capital last week, was harsh. It left several families with loss of loved ones, destroyed properties and countless suffering. But just like any other calamity that befalls a nation, important lessons should be picked up from the said sad incident, if only to gain wisdom from it to become better prepared to handle such force of nature again. Of course, we don't want that kind of calamity to happen again in the future. Nobody does. But we have little control over what nature chooses to do or unleash, so the least we can do is learn from the experience and become better prepared to handle a similar situation, should the same take place again in the future.

These are the some of the lessons I have compiled, which we can learn from the destruction brought about by typhoon Ondoy:

1. We should take care of our environment. Environmentalists are saying that the cause of the heavy rains brought by typhoon Ondoy was global warming. Climate change brings unexpected heavy rains. Climate change is caused by some practices of man which are destructive to the environment. When we take care of our environment, we lessen the destructive impact that typhoons and other environmental occurrences will bring.

2. We should throw our trash in proper places. When I was in Manila a couple of months ago, I saw that this girl who was riding in a vehicle ahead of us was, without any care at all, throwing her trash out of her car window. It took a lot of effort not to stop her car and admonish her for it. Throwing your trash anywhere leads to clogged drainage. When heavy rains come, water has nowhere to seep through if the drainage are clogged.

3. Have lifeboats and water safety devices ready. When you live in an area frequently hit by typhoon and ones where the drainage system aren't good or are even clogged, you need to have lifeboats and other water safety devices in handy. They do help a lot. Save money in order to buy them. Or you can also improvise by using empty water bottles as your life vests. Check out help on how to make life vests out of empty water bottles.

Those are some of the things I can think of which we can learn from the typhoon Ondoy incident. How about you? Do you have other ideas as well? Do share. We'd love to learn about them. Any helpful lesson is worth learning about.
